RIYADH: Saudi authorities have beheaded a man convicted of killing a fellow Saudi while trying to rob him.

Ahmed bin Saeed al-Masoudi has been executed after being convicted of murdering Mohammad bin Yahya al-Masoudi after breaking into his home, the Interior Ministry said in a statement Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which people convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery can be executed, usually with a sword.

The beheading brings to nine the number of beheadings in the kingdom this year, according to an Associated Press count. In 2008,102 people were beheaded.
